TITLE: Terrorism

ONE SENTENCE SUMMARY: The class will complete an internet problem solving activity in cooperative learning groups, write plans to combat terrorism, share ideas via e-mail with another class in Missouri.

COMPUTER PROGRAM OUTCOME: Each student will use the internet as a resource for inquiry, communication with other students about their project, and post their findings.

SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM OUTCOME: Each student will be able to solve problems which relate to Global Issues.

COMPUTER PROGRAM ACTIVITIES:

1. Using the process of inquiry, each cooperative learning group will conduct searches on the internet to find:

a. a working definition of terrorism

b. what motivates terrorists?

c. the international effects of terrorism
d. the role of "state supported', terrorism
e. efforts to combat terrorism
f. examples of terrorist acts
g. role of the media on terrorism
h. military action against terrorist nations
i. what is the future of terrorism
. effect of technology on terrorism
k. threat to the United States
I. role of Libya in Pan Am 103 bombing
m. evaluation of airport security systems

2. Word process plans to fight, reduce, or eliminate terrorism.

SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM ACTIVITIES:

1. Answer a set of questions on terrorism.

2. Write plans to fight, reduce, or eliminate terrorism.

3. Present their plans on terrorism.

4. Participate in a class discussion on terrorism.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION: Mr. Blair will serve as a resource person for each group of students doing internet research, will lead students in class discussions on terrorism, assist with writing of plans. Additionally, Mr. Blair will contact Ms. Pam Alden at Stewartsville, Missouri High School and assist her in setting up the same internet project with her Current Events class.

TIME TO BE COMPLETED: The unit will begin on April 6, 1998 and last about four weeks.
