Journey Into Outer Space
A Science and Literature Unit
For the Second Grade

Invitation

And it's 5-4-3-2-1 .... time for take off! Come along on a journey into outer space to learn fun and interesting facts about the sun, moon, and stars.

Situation

This unit will mainly be covered in our classroom setting allowing 30 minute sessions each day. It should take 10- 12 days to get through the unit. We will also spend additional time in the school technology lab and the school media center to enhance the unit.

Tasks

1. Teacher will stimulate student interest through classroom lectures and class discussion time.

2. Students will work in partners to prepare a poster display on the sun, moon, or stars.

3. Students will work in groups to research sun, moon, and star facts using the internet and other sources.

4. Students will create "fact flip books" on the sun, moon, and stars.

5. Students will create a computer slide presentation, as a class, to present to kindergarten students.

Interactions

Individual work in the classroom setting. Working in partners to prepare poster display Work as a class group to present slide presentation.

Assessment

Daily work evaluation
Class critiques of poster presentations
Rubric for slide content and design
Final test over unit

Computer, CD Rom, Kid Pix Program-4 Color Printer, Internet Access, Various Library Books, Poster Board, Art Supplies, etc.
